IBM, after shocking observers in 2017 by posting cloud-computing revenue on par with that of cloud powerhouses Microsoft and Amazon, is counting on sustained R&D investments to drive more cloud growth in 2018 as IBM earned more than 1,900 cloud-technology patents and released an AI-optimized chip.
