Self-checkout is badly in need of an upgrade. Bar codes have to be positioned just so to be read. And missing or flawed codes can stop the process and frustrate customers. Ask anyone who buys groceries at a self-checkout terminal and has seen the dreaded “Attendant has been notified” message.
